REVIEW: "WINTER'S TALE" by Jayne Waterford

Imagine, if you will, that Hando [played by Russell Crowe in Geoffrey Wright's "ROMPER STOMPER" (1992)] heard that Davey (Daniel Pollock) was dead, which he is incidently. He goes around to Davey's cozy, Edelweiss playhouse in his gran's back yard, goes inside and on Davey's bed is Lucifer (Will Smith). In Akiva Goldsman's "WINTER'S TALE" (2014), Russell Crowe gives us a story book demon who is Pearly Soames or Hando (with jewels) after he met Lucifer.

Interestingly, Pearly has the rights to the profits of all criminal activity in the five points and surrounding burrows in New York, much like Tameny in Martin Scorsese's "GANGS OF NEW YORK" (2002). And his tale is set in a time close but not quite up to the comtemporary age, when Mayor Hostetler (Russell Crowe) ruled New York as mayor in Akiva Goldsman's "BROKEN CITY" (2013). [I didn't like it. It was as linear with fixed characters used in the same wooden cut-out way as in Nicholas Jarecki's "ARBITRAGE" (2012)] New York is an area Crowe knows well and was probably working out some ideas for the role with his phone prop all that time ago.

"WINTER'S TALE" is a fairy tale, set in New York. It features ancient people who live amoung us

unchanged and purposeful magic brought to us by a white horse, like Tonto's white stallion in Gore Verbinski's "THE LONE RANGER" (2013), played by Phoebe very convincingly. She was a bit of a star. Silver was also played by Cloud Ten. Also see Cloud Ten's collaboration with Don Johnson in Quentin Tarantino's "DJANGO UNCHAINED" (2012).

The "WINTER'S TALE"'s white horse is a younger and more nubile version of the white spirit and has the ultimate acutrement: a perfect realisation of gossimer wings. He is ridden by Peter Lake (Colin Farrell) and company and this is where the story becomes interesting. The "WINTER'S TALE" is a handsome mix of adult flavour and children's pace: fairy tale. Some parts are so racey you wonder if it would make it over the heads of little ones but then that's what Jo Rowling and Angela Carter were putting out there: a non-sexless reality in a fantasy genre, in part what Bill Henson's potraits show, an artform where children are sometimes thought of as sexual beings. Lyra "Silvertongue" Belacqua (Dakota Blue Richards) bouncing along on the back of a giant polar bear in Chris Weitz's "THE GOLDEN COMPASS" (2007) comes to mind. Very Carteresque.

Real children's sexuality is not public fair. Of course in

reality kids sort themselves out in a protected environment. But this is story telling. And in "WINTER'S TALE" the cherubs are overdressed children with their arms up to be carried to bed, while the heroine is a braless, Pre-Raphelite girl who lives in the cold. She is afflicted with Doc. "I'll-be-your-hucklebury" Holliday (Val Kilmer) George P. Cosmatos and Kevin Jarre's "TOMBSTONE" (1993)'s affectation and helped along by Pearly.

Was that spoiling too much? Hopefully it was too puzzling to take root.

Pearly's divination jewels sound a children's story note. As does the repeatedly nick-of-time rescue from gangs of Pearly's hoodlems by our shining white horse. And yet the complexity, sexuality and niceness of Peter and Beverly's courtship is pretty much Mills and Boon.

We have: a pretty, coy and good thief, hanging around to perform his miracle, a hot Lucifer, a wicked demon, William Hurt's nicest role ever and many, "ah," moments as realities of this world are revealed.

Funded by our own James Packer "WINTER'S TALE" was very pleasant. 7/10

Set in a mythic New York City and spanning more than a century, “Winter’s Tale” is about miracles, crossed destinies, and the age-old battle between good and evil. The film marks the directorial debut of Academy Award®-winning screenwriter Akiva Goldsman (“A Beautiful Mind”), and stars Colin Farrell (“Saving Mr. Banks”), Jessica Brown Findlay (Beverly Penn), William Hurt (Isaac Penn), Mckayla Twiggs (Young Willa), Will Smith (Judge), Jennifer Connelly (Virginia Gamely)own Findlay (TV’s “Downton Abbey”), and Academy Award® winner Russell Crowe (“Gladiator”).

Peter Lake (Farrell) is a master thief, who never expected to have his own heart stolen by the beautiful Beverly Penn (Brown Findlay). But their love is star-crossed: she burns with a deadly form of consumption, and Peter has been marked for a much more violent death by his one-time mentor, the demonic Pearly Soames (Crowe). Peter desperately tries to save his one true love, across time, against the forces of darkness, even as Pearly does everything in his power to take him down—winner take all and loser be damned. What Peter needs is a miracle, but only time will tell if he can find one.
