REVIEW: "UNDER THE SKIN" by Jayne Waterford

So nice to see a film where everything tedious has been cut away.

Jonathan Glazer's "UNDER THE SKIN" (2013) is about a woman who is nothing but allure, indiscriminate allure. Plus Glazer toys with the definition of porn. "UNDER THE SKIN" is a film attended by men, alone, spaced around the cinema in the traditional sense in the middle of the day. And yet what happens to men who are seduced on screen is when they wade towards her, they wade in and find themselves immersed, erect. And that is what defines porn in our culture, the showing of an erect penis that I will refer to as, "position one," after the anatomical drawing of man by Michaelangelo, from now on. Sure she gets naked but nothing happens to her that isn't seen in M rated movies. Apart from Johansson being peeled off to reveal a ceramic coated Jessica Mance.

Characters are nameless, which makes it a little difficult to discuss but this film is gorgeous. Glazer's mind slips between textures and colours, The Piss Christ, Smart's and others' figures in urban landscape and environments uninhibited. It was a real pleasure.

I hope to write more about this film and hope it's still

on when I get home. There are lots of puns on skin and water is built into everything. This is the most exciting film in the cinema right now. The most uninhibited cinema available. Go see it. 10/10
