REVIEW: "THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN 2: RISE OF ELECTRO" by Jayne Waterford

By the time we get to the end of Marc Webb's "THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN 2: RISE OF ELECTRO" (2014) we feel like we've said a very fond farewell to the SPIDER-MAN story. Aunty Em has demonstrated how to tidy it up in a box, goblin/Harry has comeback to wow us with his dental hygene and Gwen is dead. *spoiler alert*

What could possibly be next? Well, according to the scrolling, credits-implanted coda, "X-MEN" characters with breast enhancements is next. There is no visual anticipation of another amazing SPIDER-MAN any time soon.

I found the realisation of Jamie Foxx's Spidey-nemesis Electro very good. We excuse the fact that he survives his transformative event, after the manner of Dr. Bruce Banner (the Hulk)'s survival of gamma radiation poisoning that would have killed anybody. We go along with the man who has become pure energy with intelligence as its organising principle aka, Thomas Hayden Church's Sandman in Sam Raimi's "SPIDER-MAN 3" (2007). Marvel seems to have purloined a principle from the DC Comic franchise Zack Snyder's "WATCHMEN" (2009) blue man, Dr. Manhattan (Billy Crudup). And we dig the basic

science demonstrated through the film. That if you over charge a battery it explodes. And we like that Gwen dumped the passive aggressive person in her life, as we all should but are prepared to overlook the fiction that they change when she takes him back.

I found Marc Webb's "THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN 2: RISE OF ELECTRO" (2014) securely knitted into the franchise, complete with a speaking, Stan Lee cameo, with costuming and what looks influenced by the comic books and like the characters in the Tobey Maguire films (2002)-(2007). And yet I found the people wondering around saying they really enjoyed it are too young to remember James Franco's goblin incarnation of Harry, Dafoe's Osborn's son in "SPIDER-MAN 3" in comparison to Dane DeHaan's more edgy and anorexic sicko. Are they obliged to only look within the franchise. Stan Lee is sitting right there. After the manner of Henry Selick's "CORALINE" (2009), conceptualised by Neil Gaiman, is there nothing beyond the city limits of New York on the drawing board?

I also found that the editing worked against hope and high feeling. "THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN" logo and heraldic music plays hard up against Dr. and Dr. Parker rocketing to their deaths in a private jet. Gwen could have gone to London and started a new life,

secure in the good will of someone who loves her but know. She's dispatched with a blow to the back of the head. The experience was a bummer. It was death. It was the end.

But lucky me, Paul Giamatti bookends our experience with the evocation of a stupid criminal, Alexi Seiurj/the Rhino. Alexi is someone so stupid that he winds the window down to see what Spidy wants as he tears through the city streets in a stolen truck. I've never seen Giamatti do anything like it before. This is a flat and uninspired though very excited criminal. Stupid and up for it. At one point he seems to channel Gru, first half of Pierre Coffin & Chris Renaud's "DESPICABLE ME" (2010) Gru. He's in the process of coping it sweet when we cut to our strange scrolling credits experience. (Nice teeth :)

Nice lettering btw. I appreciated the detail with the suggestion of wrap around on the Mc... Nice to see a little attention brought to respect for the tradition of our language. :)

This film is as large as a whole burrow of New York and it looks great. 7/10
