REVIEW: "MOMMY" by Jayne Waterford

Xavier Dolan's "MOMMY" (2014) is a series of portraits of volatile people in 6x6. Xavier Dolan owns a Hasselblad and loves viewing his subjects through it's 80mM lens. After we have journeyed along with this violent and verbally abusive, full-on family: mother (Anne Dorval) and son (Antoine-Olivier Pilon), Diane and Steve for some time, Xavier Dolan puts the format to use. Kyla (Suzanne Clément) a neighbour from across the road sacrifices a lot of her time with her family to become a part of Die and Steve's lives and with her influence they attain exhilaration. Steve grasps the now restrictive sides of the format and pushes them open like double doors. Happiness comes to be in a fully animated tableau of life. Things snap back to 6x6 the moment Die's aggressive habit's reassert themselves. We don't even see when it happens but it seems fulfilment becomes secured in the place of hope and longing, out of reach, only imagined.

Xavier Dolan's "MOMMY" (2014) is a cinematic joy. It's not often I get to sit in the cinema smiling until it hurts like the Cheshire Cat but last night I did. It's a story of such strong emotional content that we are swept away. We're surprised and moved by the elegance of the portrait compositions, a formality that vaguely insulates us from the impact of the

character's trauma. It's like Xavier Dolan is holding our hand and we didn't notice the moment when he picked us up.

I'm sure this film will make it to a larger audience. Hold out for it. 10/10
