REVIEW: "MALEFICENT" by Jayne Waterford

Robert Stromberg's "MALEFICENT" (2014) is magnificent. And I don't only mean Maleficent (Academy Award® winner Angelina Jolie). There are two kingdoms. The human realm ruled by a human king and the Moors is protected by a ruler who becomes despotic and crowns herself. The Moors is like Sanctuary in Rupert Sanders' "SNOW WHITE & THE HUNTSMAN" (2012) only more.

The story is wonderfully cast, packed with stimulating creatures and scenes, funny, as Aurora (Sleeping Beauty played by Elle Fanning) is essentially cursed by the wishes of the good fairies: Flittle (Lesley Manville), Knotgrass (Academy Awrd® winner Imelda Staunton) and Thistletwit (Juno Temple). She is so happy all the time as to be obtuse. Angelina Jolie as Malificent not only brings us a feast of awesome beauty in a stunning silhouette but channels some of her Tomb Raider mystique. This is played out in her imperious attitude and devoted servant, her wings, a crow named Diaval (Sam Riley). King Stefan is played by Sharlto Copley, a man who has previously brought us strong South Africans in both Neill Blomkamp's 10/10 "DISTRICT 9" (2009) & Joe Carnahan's erherm "THE A-TEAM" (2010), at once dashing and cruel.

The attention to detail in costuming is mesmerising

and the director's casual use of beauty and sets lends even more credibility.

Poor prince charming is a bit dense and incapable of true love as it turns out, a familiar theme in Disney's recent works, see Chris Buck and Jennifer Lee's "FROZEN" (2013). But it seems that some of our audience didn't see "FROZEN" and they thought the nature of Beauty's true love was very saucy indeed.

Maleficent's wings were awesome. I loved her character. And the land of Moor dazzles constantly. I'll see it again. 10/10
